Why Was The World’s First Giant Dumptruck Never Produced?

Why Was The World's First Giant Dumptruck Never Produced

Depending on the size of the job, there is a wide range of dumptrucks available to suit your needs, featuring different levels of articulation, payload and manoeuvrability to ensure they can safely travel to and from different work sites with ease.

The largest type available are ultra-class haul trucks, typically designed specifically for use in open pit mines. The largest at present of these in terms of payload capacity is the Belaz 75710, which can carry 496 short tons (450 tonnes)

The very first of these, and arguably the most famous, is the Terex 33-19 Titan in 1973, which held the record for the largest truck in the world for 25 years, 16 of which was spent in active service.

It was perhaps most famous for its appearance alongside Jack Nicklaus, the most successful

golf player of all time,in an advertisement for Terex Trucks from 1977.

In it, the Golden Bear hit a shot from a makeshift sand bunker at the Kaiser Steel iron mine in Eagle Mountain, California, whilst also advertising the “lot of iron” found in the company’s other heavy equipment. This was amongst the Terex Titan’s most famous and possibly most vital roles.

However, despite the huge promise of the machine, only one was ever made, primarily due to being a victim of circumstance.

When the Titan was being conceived and prototyped, there was a belief that more ore, tar shale and tar sands would be mined, which would require progressively larger and more sophisticated dump trucks to carry.

This was due to a sudden spike in demand for domestic coal in the wake of the oil crisis, which led to a spike in crude oil prices.

Projected to cost $1.5m when it was scheduled to launch in 1976, by the time this happened the coal market had softened and the market for the ultra haul truck ultimately never appeared. Only the prototype was ever made, first used by Kaiser Steel and later by Westar Mining when they bought the site.
